The Office of the Municipal Clerk
"Your Doorway to Local Government"

The office of the Municipal Clerk is historical in its traditions, serving as a direct link between residents and their local government since Biblical times. The early keepers of archives were often called "rememberers" and before writing came into use, their memory served as the public record.

NJ Statutes define the Municipal Clerk's responsibilities as:

  • Secretary to the Governing Body
  • Secretary to the Municipal Corporation
  • Administrative and Licensing Officer
  • Election Administrator and Registrar of Voters
  • Custodian of Records
However, these core duties reflect just a portion of the many responsibilities and activities of the Municipal Clerk's Office.

First monument erected to honor African Americans in Township History

Montclair recently erected its first memorial in township history which honors African Americans – a monument to commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his wife Coretta Scott King. Unveiling ceremonies, hosted by Peaceful Warriors,Inc., a Montclair, NJ, based civic group, will be held at the newly designed King Memorial Garden at Nishuane Park (near corner of Harrison & Cedar Avenues) on Friday, June 19, at 6:00 p.m.

The four-foot high monument of polished black granite is inscribed with dual etchings on both sides to commemorate the life and legacy of the two civil rights icons. The monument is a years-long realization of Montclair residents and founders of the Peaceful Warriors Alison and Harold Moore. The monument is designed by David Toler, also a resident of Montclair.
