The Office of the Municipal Clerk
"Your Doorway to Local Government"
The office of the Municipal Clerk is historical in its traditions, serving as a direct link between residents and their local government since Biblical times. The early keepers of archives were often called "rememberers" and before writing came into use, their memory served as the public record.
NJ Statutes define the Municipal Clerk's responsibilities as:
- Secretary to the Governing Body
- Secretary to the Municipal Corporation
- Administrative and Licensing Officer
- Election Administrator
and Registrar of Voters
- Custodian of Records
However, these core duties reflect just a portion of the
many responsibilities and activities of the Municipal Clerk's
Office.

Montclair has long been recognized as a diverse community. We take pride in one another and embrace our differences, while recognizing that our diversity is one of our most valued assets. For this reason it is important that we do our utmost to ensure a complete and accurate count of all our residents in the 2010 Census.
The United States Constitution requires that the number of people living in the U.S. be counted every 10 years. The 2010 census will be the largest undertaken in our country's history and will count people of all ages, races, sexes, ethnic groups, citizens and non-citizens alike, regardless of legal status.
An accurate census count is extremely important because it ensures that people have fair representation in Congress and in state government. An accurate count of Montclair’s population will allow us to receive our fair share of federal funding for many critical programs and projects, such as education, health care, transportation, and other vital services.
So be counted in the 2010 Census. And make yourself count.
We'll be posting Census 2010 information regularly on this web site to keep you abreast of our efforts to help residents participate in the 2010 Census.
