In January 2008, the Township enacted an ordinance to preserve and enhance the Township’s historical and cultural heritage by preserving buildings which have distinctive architectural features or historical associations.

Montclair Code Section 347-173 states that no permit for partial or total demolition shall be issued by the Construction Official for a building or structure which is, in whole or in part, at least 75 years old, until a determination has been made by the Historic Preservation Officer as to whether or not the building or structure may have historical, cultural, architectural, aesthetic or other significance.
