Mayor Ed Remsen has been a results-oriented leader in Montclair for nearly two decades.
He has been active in the areas of housing, economic development, planning, youth
sports and recreation and fundraising for local groups. He served on the Township
Council from 2000-2004 as the 2nd Ward Councilor and was elected Mayor in 2004.
Ed was a founder of the Montclair Economic Development Corp., the Township’s partner
in improving our commercial districts and increasing ratables. As President and Board
Chair, he was an active participant in the creation of the Town Center Master Plan,
development of the Montclair VISA Card, formation of the Montclair Farmers Market,
Downtown Saturday Night, and A Taste of Montclair. He served on the Planning Board
for two years and is a long-time baseball and soccer coach.
During his six years on the Township Council he initiated or supported many projects
including: creation of the Town Center Historic District, the Inclusionary Zoning
Ordinance, renovation of the town’s parks and playgrounds, development of a proposal to
expand and upgrade the Clary Anderson Recreation Complex, formation of the Montclair
Arts Council, and he was the author of the Council’s Strategic Plan. He has worked
closely with merchants in the Watchung Plaza and Walnut Street areas.
Professionally, Ed has been involved for over 30 years in local government and non-
profit work – he is currently Regional Vice President for Northern New Jersey for the
American Heart Association where he supervises staff that coordinates AHA’s Heart
Walks and special events; he held leadership position with Big Brothers Big Sisters
organizations in New York and New Jersey. He ran a community development agency in
NYC for a decade and did open housing and community organizing work for the NYC
Human Rights Commission. He has a Bachelor’s in Urban Studies from Fordham
University and a Masters in Public Administration from Baruch College/CUNY. Ed has
completed the New Jersey Alternate Route program and hopes to be a High School Social
Studies teacher in the future.
His wife of 27 years, Diane Wiley, is a Senior Vice President of Brown Brothers
Harriman, a private bank; they have three children, all of whom attended Montclair’s
public schools: Christopher, 24, Jennifer, 21, and Michael, almost 18. His family has
lived in Montclair since 1987. Ed is originally from the Bronx and moved to Montclair
from Brooklyn. |
