Boards, Commissions, and Committees:
Joint Capital Improvement Adv. Comm.-Council Liaison
Fair Tax Valuation Task Force
Jerold Freier joined the Montclair
Township Council in July 2004, after completing his
second 3-year term on
the Montclair School Board. He previously served on the
Montclair Planning Board.
On the School Board Jerry played
a leadership role improving the budget process and enrollment
and facilities planning.
He succeeded in getting the New Jersey School Board
Association to lobby for laws and regulations that would
help the
Montclair schools. For example they now support rather
than oppose state funding for school busing needed to
achieve court mandated integration guidelines.
On the Planning
Board Jerry worked on zoning changes to prevent new churches
and schools from being built in single-family
neighborhoods, while making it easier for them to locate
in other areas. He also worked on an ordinance that permits
restaurants to offer sidewalk seating, while preserving
sufficient sidewalk space for pedestrians.
Freier brings
to public service over 35 years of experience in business,
financial analysis and problem solving. His
current assignment at the Federal Reserve is enforcing
the consumer protection laws such as Truth-in-Lending
and the Fair Housing Act. Jerry has Masters degrees from
Harvard University in City Planning and Education and
a B.A. from the University of Virginia.
Jerry and his family
have been residents of Montclair since 1985. His two children
Harris and Miriam attended
Nishuane, Hillside, Glenfield and Montclair High School.
Harris, a graduate of the University of Virginia, is a
second year law school student at Cornell. Miriam a graduate
of the University of Miami is working for Lehman Brothers
in New York City. His wife Lora, a professional social
worker is employed by three nursing homes located in Essex
County.
Jerry's leisure-times activities include bowling
at Eagle Rock Lanes and long walks with his badly behaved
dog,
Sweet Pea. He is a long time supporter of the National
Trust for Historic Preservation, Mothers Against Drunk
Driving and the Salvation Army. The entire Freier family
are loyal “Montclairians” and both children
are always eager to come home and catch up with their
friends. |
