Sandra Lang is a sales executive
in the Applied Learning and Technolgies Division of
the McGraw Hill Corporation.
She previously worked as Assistant Director, Liscensing
at Bell Communications Research and as a sales representative
with IBM. She is a life-long resident of Montclair and
is widely recognized throughout the township for her tireless
involvement in community activities and her committment
to civil rights.
RACE RELATIONS
During her term as chairperson of the Montclair Civil
Rights Commission, “Sandy” initiated the highly
successful Conversations on Race program. The program
currently involves hundreds of Montclair residents of
all racial and ethnic backgrounds. Using inspiration from
then President Bill Clinton’s appeal for communities
to organize discussions on race, she contacted the National
Commission on Race Relations for helpful information.
The Montclair Civil Rights Commission launched the program
in 1998. Through her role on the Civil Rights Commission
she has helped shape the Township's affirmative action
polices on procurement and employee hiring and promotions.
RADON
REMOVAL
In the mid 1980’s, Sandra was a vocal activist in
Montclair’s successful fight to get the U.S. Department
of Environmental Protection to clean up radon in the Nishuane
Road neigbhorhood. She has had an active role in the efforts
to protect and to improve neighborhood parks in Montclair.
HOUSING
Sandra currently serves on the Board of the Mathew Carter
Housing Complex on Glenridge Ave. This successful and
innovative approach to affordable housing in Montclair
has become a statewide model of providing affordable housing
to Montclair residents of moderate incomes. The Mathew
Carter complex was built over 25 years ago by forming
a partnership with the State of New Jersey Mortgage Finance
Authority and currently provides housing for moderate
income families through rent subsidies from the U.S. Department
of Housing and Urban Development.
COMMUNITY COMMITMENT
Sandra also serves on the board of the Montclair Neighborhood
Council . She is a former Board Member of the Montclair
YWCA where she was one of the first recipients of the
Fifty Women You Should Know award. She is past president
of the Montclair Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc., and past president of the Hampton University
Alunmi Association, North Jersey Chapter. She is Member
of the Montclair Branch NAACP and a recipient of thie
NAACP’s community service award.
Ms. Lang , a Montclair
High School graduate, received a Juris Doctorate Degree
from Rutgers University School
of Law, Newark, NJ; and her MBA Degree from Rutgers
University Graduate School of Management. She earned a
Bachelor of
Science Degree in business from Hampton University,
Hampton, Virginia. Ms. Lang is single and resides on Lincoln
Street
and attends Union Baptist Church in Montclair. |
