Map of MontclairHistorical Perspective

Montclair Township’s development pattern was originally laid out by investors and developers following the construction of the Greenwood Lake Railroad in 1868, which connected Jersey City to Montclair. At the time, Montclair was a community of farms, orchards and woods, with a few dirt roads, a handful of businesses, and 2,000 inhabitants. In the years that followed, many of the old farms were bought by investors. They built new roads through their properties and divided them into building lots to sell to newcomers, who were attracted to Montclair’s country atmosphere and proximity to New York. By 1880, just 12 years later, Montclair’s population had more than doubled. The location and direction of streets and open spaces grew in a very haphazard way, largely as a result of private, or at best, neighborhood needs. There were no standard widths or designs of the streets or the lots.
