Montclair Township will be a co-sponsor in a county-wide gun buy-back program to be held in five Essex Municipalities: Montclair, Newark, Irvington, Orange and East Orange. The program will take place February 15 and 16, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in houses of worship in each location. Montclair's gun buy-back location will be Union Baptist Church, 12-14 Midland Avenue (see map). Montclair Police Officers will be stationed at the church to collect and secure the weapons.
Essex County residents can anonymously turn in up to 3 guns – no questions asked. The gun amnesty program will work on a first come–first served basis and funding is limited. Guns will be assessed by a sliding scale which ranges from $50 for an inoperable weapon to up to $250 for an operable assault weapon. The Attorney General’s Office will be paying for guns with criminal forfeiture monies obtained by its Division of Criminal Justice.
The Essex County gun buy-back event is co-sponsored by the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, Montclair, East Orange, Irvington, Newark and Orange Police Departments.
