South Park Street Project

South Park Street, Montclair, NJSouth Park Street has long been considered a focal point revitalizing Montclair’s central business district, known as Montclair Center. The March 2006 update to the Master Plan included a recommendation to create a public center on South Park to encourage economic development and the arts. In 2004, Street-Works LLC, under contract to the BID, completed their study, "An Urban Audit: Strategies for a More Connected Center". The study concluded with ten recommended Montclair Center initiatives, which they considered a blueprint for success. Third on this list is the creation of a “Great Public Room” on South Park Street that would enhance opportunities for outdoor public programs to make Montclair Center even more of a destination.

Earlier this year, the Township awarded a contract to architectural design team Smith Maran Architects of Montclair and Arterial of Newark to develop two design concepts incorporating all previously completed studies for the area. Construction estimates are not available for the conceptual design options, but the construction budget for these improvements is $750,000. Design work is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2011.
