The Montclair Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs offers year-round recreational, athletic and cultural programs for all ages and abilities. The Department serves the interests and welfare of all residents through programs that encourage healthful and active lifestyles, provide opportunities for learning and enrichment, and help foster a sense of community. The Department strives to offer a wide variety of activities through innovative programs and cooperative ventures in order to continue building recreational opportunities, while enhancing the quality of life for Montclair residents.

The Montclair Recreation/Pop Warner Bulldogs completed one of their most successful seasons, with 4 of the Bulldogs’ 6 teams, finishing in first place in their respected divisions. The locals went 3-3 in action against the Jackie Robinson Bears (Newark) this past Sunday in the final week of the 2014 regular season.

The Blue & White Flag football teams (ages 5-7) split games with Jackie Robinson, with the Bulldogs White team (4-3) losing a tough 14-0 defeat to the Bears. The team has showed progress each week and looks to be a force next season in NJPW. Standouts for the team were Aaron Smith and Zion Gordon.

Montclair Offers Chess for Life Program for Kids PDF Print E-mail

Chess For Life logo Chess For Life (CFL), in conjunction with the Montclair Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs, is offering an after school chess program for kids in grades 3-12, September 30 through December 4.

The CFL Beginners 101program meets Tuesdays, 4:30-5:30 p.m.; Beginners 201 meets Thursdays 4:30-5:30 p.m. and the advanced class meets Thursdays, 6:00-7:00 p.m. The location is the Edgemont Park Shelter House on Valley Road, Montclair.

Overlookers Take League Crown PDF Print E-mail

The Montclair Recreation 30 and over men's softball league held its championship game at Nishuane Park two weeks ago where the Overlookers of Montclair, managed by Jordan Safirstein, defeated the 2013 defending champions the Zombies in extra innings by a score of 18-16 in a well-played game.

The Overlooks entered the playoffs as a number 4 seed and defeated the top seeded Mad Dawgs in the semi-finals in an earlier game that morning, to reach the finals against the Zombies.

Local Football Moms Get Lesson in Concussion Symptom Awareness PDF Print E-mail

The coaching staff of the Montclair Recreation/Pop Warner Bulldogs youth football/cheerleading program held a Heads Up Football tackling clinic for football moms of the program last Saturday morning at Nishuane Park. The clinic is part of a nationwide movement of the National Football League and USA Football to educate moms of youth football players across the country about the importance proper techniques of tackling to help avoid concussions, as well as making sure their sons are well hydrated before and during practice.
