The Department of Community Services is responsible for streets, public property and parks, refuse collection and recycling, shade tree maintenance, snow and leaf removal, water utility, all community infrastructure, engineering.

The Department of Community Services would like to remind residents that the size of refuse and recycling cans must not exceed a 35 gallons and full refuse cans must weigh no more than 50 lbs. Refuse and recycling containers should be solidly constructed of metal or rigid plastic only and should have handles. All containers must be tightly covered to prevent the intrusion of rainwater.

Statement by the Township Manager Regarding Curbing Costs PDF Print E-mail

Township Manager Joseph M. Hartnett issued a statement today to clarify the costs of installing curbing in the Township. “Unfortunately, a lot of misinformation is being spread on this issue,” the Manager explained. “I believe this stems from the fact that a hypothetical discussion occurred at a Township Council meeting where people were discussing hypothetical numbers,” Hartnett said. “In any case,” he pointed out, “the fact is that there is little or no price difference between installing Belgian block curbing and installing concrete curbing, and sometimes, depending on the market, concrete is even more expensive than block.” He noted that the most recent Township bids received from contractors indicated prices per foot for installing curbing as follows:

Steve Schuckman Appointed Township Arborist PDF Print E-mail

Township Manager Joseph M. Hartnett announced today that he has appointed Stephen M. Schuckman of Caldwell, New Jersey, as arborist for the Township of Montclair. Mr. Schuckman will serve in the position as a consultant.

“After carefully evaluating our Shade Tree operations since the departure of former Township Arborist Kevin Ward, Director of Community Services Stephen Wood and I have determined that it is in the best interests of the operation at this time to fill this position on a consultant basis,” Manager Hartnett stated.

Montclair Installs First Wind Turbine in Region PDF Print E-mail

Wind Turbine ribbon cutting ceremonyTrue to its environmental leadership position in the State of New Jersey, Montclair Township in recent months has been adding scores of projects geared to sustainable energy use. This month Montclair became the first municipal government in the region to implement wind turbine technology for its operations.

“We’re doing so many things that meet conservation objectives, that it’s hard to keep track of them all,” said Gary Obszarny, Director of Utilities for the Township. Obszarny has been assigned by Township Manager Joseph Hartnett to keep Montclair on the cutting edge of energy efficiency in its facility operations.

(download refuse collection schedule) This new collection schedule will include changes to your collection area and collection dates. The new program will improve service to you and reduce operating costs.
