Montclair Police Department is once again collaborating with the community by rewarding young bike riders for wearing helmets. The initiative was first introduced in 2015 with an officer giving “citation” to youngsters safely riding their bikes which they could bring to a local business to receive a treat. The ticket rewards program was a way to enhance awareness of bicycle safety.

This year, the MPD introduced a two-phase approach with a new Bicycle/Skateboard Safety Initiative, once again in collaboration with the department’s main partner and coordinator of the project, Tracey Diamond, of Tracey Diamond Design.

Montclair Police have been receiving numerous complaints regarding children in town operating bicycles and skateboards without wearing helmets, say Lt. Tyrone Williams and Officer Travis Davis the MPD members heading the program. In an attempt to curtail such dangerous behavior, new special warning tickets will be given to officers on patrol, in the traffic bureau, and the Community Service Unit.

Phase 1 of the initiative focuses on education and encouragement. When an officer sees a youngster riding a bicycle or skateboard without a helmet (or committing other dangerous bicycle offenses), the officer will stop the child and issue a warning. In addition to the warning, officers will provide coupons to kids in violation. The coupons will be for 10% off a bicycle helmet at specific bike shops in town:

Pedal Montclair – 15 Midland Avenue
Diamond Cycle – 409 Bloomfield Avenue
Montclair Bikery – 145 Valley Road

Phase 2 of the initiative will have officers stopping children who are wearing helmets and operating their bicycles safely. They will reward the kids with vouchers redeemable for a special treat at a variety of local businesses in town:

Joyist – 617 Valley Road
Local Coffee – 107 Watchung Avenue
Watchung Booksellers – 54 Fairfield Street
Gelati – 571 Bloomfield Avenue
Sweet Home Montclair – 219 Glenridge Avenue
Amore Pizza – 322 Orange Road
Mahir’s Barbershop – 320 Orange Road

MPD hopes the reward system program raises awareness of the dangers of riding without a helmet and improves overall safety throughout the township.
