Wildcats Close out Season on Upward Swing

The Montclair Wildcats junior softball spring season came to an end last week in the opening round of the Passaic Valley softball recreational league playoffs, with a tough 8-7 loss to Verona. Verona is annually a strong softball program that produces great players from the recreation level through high school.

This sets the bar for what the Montclair teams strive for each season – to compete against the best in surrounding townships.

Without a volunteer coach at the start the season the team was in danger of canceling the season until volunteer coach Merrill O’brien stepped up to the plate to lead our team with some softball experience.

As a longtime girls soccer coach in the past, coach O’Brien’s positive influences of hard work and stressing the girls’ skill sets improved the team’s performance every week during the season.

With new-found excitement, the Montclair Recreation Department will look to provide more skill-setting clinics during the off season in the hope that more girls might be willing to come out to play next season.

Montclair Recreation offers softball to girls in grades 3 to i from April to June. Experience is not necessary. Teams meet 2 to 3 times per week for games and practices as members of the Passaic Valley Softball Association. Registration opens February 1.

Volunteer coaches are greatly needed to run program.
