How often do I need to clean my storm drain?

• There’s no set schedule for clearing your drain, but a good rule of thumb is to clean about twice a month. We ask that participants commit to maintaining their adopted drain for at least one year. Be sure to check it before and after heavy rain, during leaf collection season, and as snow begins to melt to help prevent flooding.

What special equipment do I need?

• Always wear gloves when removing debris from a storm drain. Basic equipment includes a tool to remove debris like a rake/shovel and a broom; keep in mind waterlogged leaves can be heavy and may require a shovel where a rake might break. You will also need a bucket and trash bags to collect the debris you are removing. If you're adopting a drain on a busy street, wear bright clothing or reflectors for safety.

What do I do with the debris I have collected?

• Some sorting is required (please wear gloves!). Cans, bottles, and recyclable plastics should be cleaned and placed in your commingled recycling bin. Compostable materials like leaves and other vegetative waste can either be composted at home or thrown in the trash. Items such as animal waste, non-recyclable plastics, and other debris should always be disposed of in the garbage. How do I estimate the amount of debris I’ve collected? Do I need to weigh it?

• To help us understand the impact Adopt-a-Drain is having on our local watersheds, we ask that you make a rough estimate in pounds (lbs) of the amount of debris you collect during each cleaning. Then you can record your estimate using the 'Track Your Impact' form. Make sure to take pictures of the debris you collect too!

Is this a safe activity that I can do with my children or a scout group?

• Adopt-a-Drain is designed to be a safe and family-friendly activity. However, participants must be at least 14 years old to take part in clean-up efforts, and only adults can sign the required waiver. Before getting started, please visit the New Jersey Adopt-a-Drain website to review safety tips and learn how to properly clear your drain.

Who can adopt a drain?

• Drains can be adopted and maintained by an individual, a family, or a group. An adult is required to officially adopt the drain and sign the liability waiver. However, children aged 14 and older are welcome to participate in clean-up activities with parental consent.

My schedule has changed. Is it possible to discontinue my drain adoption?

• While we ask participants to commit to maintaining their adopted drain for at least one year, we will assume you are continuing in the program unless we hear otherwise or you haven't submitted a clean-up report for more than three months. If you wish to discontinue your participation at any time, please email mcunliffe@montclairnjusa.org so we can make the drain available for someone else to adopt.

What happens if there are materials by or in my drain that I do not feel comfortable/able to remove?

• Safety is always most important. Never do anything that puts you at risk, and never attempt to clean inside the drain. If your drain appears to need more intensive maintenance such as chronic flooding or blockages please submit a report using Q Report, and a town employee will be assigned to inspect and address the issue.

How can I promote my efforts to my neighbors and the community?

• Talk to your neighbors: Let them know about your adopted drain and why it matters. Your example might encourage them to get involved too.
• Contact local schools, clubs, or organizations: Encourage group adoptions or service projects. It’s a great opportunity to collect community service hours!
• Use social media: Any pictures you submit in the ‘Track Your Impact’ form may be used on Township’s official website, social media channels, and in outreach materials. However, it’s important that you post too! Make sure to tag Montclair Township (@montclairnjgov). A quick post can go a long way in spreading the word!
• Every small action adds up – thank you for leading by example!
