Free tree installation for eligible Montclair residents

The Township of Montclair is planting native trees on private property through a limited-time program funded by the USDA Urban and Community Forestry Program. The goal of the program is to expand the community tree canopy, improve environmental quality, and increase access to the many benefits trees provide. Only properties located within an NJDEP-designated Overburdened Community are eligible.

As part of this effort, the Township’s independent licensed contractors will be providing the services of planting the trees upon request of individual property owners anywhere on the private property. The trees are being provided and planted at no cost to the property owners. Property owners can suggest preferred locations for tree placement on their property; however, all final placement determinations will be made by the Township's contracted licensed tree expert based on horticultural and site suitability standards.

  1. Submit a tree request form.
  2. Staff verifies eligibility and provides a waiver.
  3. A licensed contractor will plant the tree at no cost.

*After planting, you will be responsible for ongoing tree care.

PLEASE NOTE: Free native trees are available for eligible properties. Eligibility is based on location, available planting space, and tree availability. Trees are planted in the spring or fall, and planting dates vary based on seasonal conditions and program capacity.
