Current Road Closures and Traffic Impacts

Published on August 01, 2026

Montclair is currently undertaking several infrastructure improvement projects that may result in temporary road closures, lane restrictions, detours, parking restrictions, and other travel impacts.

This page provides a centralized resource for current and upcoming roadway work involving the Township, PSE&G, utility providers, contractors, and other project partners. Residents directly affected by construction will also receive advance notice through door hangers, mailed notices, or other project-specific communications.

Important: All construction schedules are subject to change based on weather, field conditions, emergency repairs, and contractor operations. PSE&G is a state-regulated utility and may change work locations with little notice, and the Township may not always receive advance notice of those changes. Temporary road closures, detours, and traffic impacts may also occur on streets not listed below.

The table below provides a consolidated overview of scheduled construction activities and roadway work currently taking place throughout Montclair. Locations and schedules are subject to change based on weather, field conditions, emergency repairs, and contractor operations.

Upper Mountain Ave Street Safety Improvements

Montclair Township will begin roadway improvement work on Upper Mountain Avenue between Watchung Avenue and Bellevue Avenue on or about June 15, weather permitting, to bring much-needed streety safety improvements. Residents should anticipate the full closure of Upper Mountain Avenue along this stretch during construction. If someone needs to access the project area during work hours, they can speak to the on-duty officer and they will generally allow local traffic and delivery vehicles as appropriate.

The project includes restoration of existing concrete curbs, driveway aprons, and ADA curb ramps, as well as installation of new drainage improvements.

For additional details and project information, please see the full construction notice: Construction Notice - Residents of Upper Mountain Ave. Township officials will be hand delivering this notice to residents between Watchung Ave & Bellevue Ave the week before the project.

Original notice of the project was emailed and posted on the township social media and the website here.

PSE&G Gas Main Service & Repairs

Please note:PSE&G manages its own construction schedule and may change work locations or add streets with little advance notice based on field conditions. The Township posts the latest information provided by PSE&G but cannot guarantee advance notice of every road closure or schedule change.

Milling & Paving (Ongoing)
PSE&G and contractors will be performing roadway restoration work throughout the township following previous utility improvements. This work includes milling (removal of existing pavement) and paving operations on various streets. PSE&G has been handling resident notifications for this project via door hangers, robocalls, and emails.

Gas Line Services & Repairs (Ongoing)
PSE&G has begun a gas system modernization project in Montclair, which will involve replacing aging cast iron gas pipes with new, durable plastic, and/or coated steel piping. Work will take place Monday through Friday form 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM. PSE&G technicians will contact the homeowner directly to give notice when work will begin. The information below is based on the latest correspondence from PSE&G's contractors, but is subject to change.

Maple Avenue Street Improvements

The project includes the reconstruction of curbs and ADA curb ramps, as well as the installation of new drainage improvements. Work is expected to begin August 11 and take approximately 2–3 weeks, weather and other conditions permitting, with a goal of completing construction before the school year begins September 3.

Construction activity will typically take place Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.During construction, Maple Avenue may be closed to through traffic at various times throughout the workday. On-street parking will also be prohibited while construction activities are underway.

Upper Mountain Ave Water Line Replacements (Project completed on July 22)

Beginning on or about May 18, 2026, a crucial water utility project to replace aging water lines will begin on Upper Mountain Avenue between Bloomfield Avenue and Berkeley Place.

The water mains along Upper Mountain Avenue have experienced water main breaks in recent years. This section of the system is part of a high-pressure zone, meaning a major break in this area has the potential to impact water service for approximately two-thirds of the Township. Replacing these aging mains is intended to improve system reliability, reduce the risk of future breaks, and protect the community’s water supply. Click here for more information about the project.

Sanitary Sewer Improvement Project

The Township will be initiating a sanitary sewer improvement project in Zone U of the Sewer System of the sewer system beginning on or about Monday, April 13, 2026.  Residents impacted by construction activity will be notified directly by the contractor in advance. Click here for more information about this project.
