New Jersey E-Bike Law Takes Effect July 2026

A new New Jersey law establishing licensing and registration requirements for e-bikes takes effect in July 2026.

Under the new law:

• All e-bikes must be registered with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC).
• Riders must be at least 15 years old and possess either a valid New Jersey driver's license or an NJMVC-issued e-bike license.
• Helmets are required for all e-bike riders
• Insurance is required for motorized bicycles.

The Township does not process e-bike registrations or licenses. The term “e-bike” commonly refers to both low-speed electric bicycles and motorized bicycles as defined in N.J.S.A. 39:1-1:

• Low-speed electric bicycle — a pedal assisted bicycle with a helper motor that only provides assistance while pedaling up to 20 mph.

• Motorized bicycle — a pedal assisted bicycle with either:
• • An engine under 50 cubic centimeters;
  • An electric motor that provides assistance while pedaling or with a throttle up to 28 mph; or
  • An electric motor that provides assistance while using a throttle, up to 15 mph.
