Voting Information - 2026 General Election

The 2026 General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Montclair residents can vote by mail, during the nine-day early voting period, or in person on Election Day.

Below are important dates, voting locations and other information to help residents prepare to vote.

Important Dates

  • October 13: Voter Registration Deadline [Check your registration status here]

  • October 24 – November 1: Early Voting Period

  • October 27: Last day to apply by mail for a Mail-In Ballot

  • November 2 at 3:00 PM: Deadline to apply in person for a Mail-In Ballot at the Essex County Clerk's Office

  • November 3: General Election Day

Polls will be open on Election Day from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Early Voting in Montclair

Registered voters can cast their ballots in person during the early voting period from Saturday, October 24 through Sunday, November 1.

Essex County voters may also use other early voting locations within Essex County. Click here to see all locations. 

Mail-In Ballots

Voters who wish to vote by mail must submit an application to the Essex County Clerk. The deadline for the County Clerk to receive an application by mail is October 27.

Voters may also apply for a Mail-In Ballot in person at the Essex County Clerk's Office until 3:00 PM on Monday, November 2.

Completed Mail-In Ballots must be returned in accordance with state deadlines and requirements.

Ballot Drop Boxes in Montclair

Secure ballot drop boxes are available at two locations in Montclair:

Montclair Municipal Building
205 Claremont Avenue

Montclair State University
1 Normal Avenue
College Avenue, Lot #8

Ballot drop boxes are available 24 hours a day during the designated voting period. Completed ballots must be deposited by 8:00 PM on Election Day, November 3.

Offices on the Ballot

Montclair voters will have the opportunity to vote in several federal, county, municipal and school board races, including:

  • U.S. Senate – New Jersey

  • U.S. House of Representatives – 10th or 11th Congressional District, depending on the voter's address

  • Essex County Executive

  • Essex County Commissioner At-Large – 4 seats

  • Essex County Commissioner – District 5

  • Montclair Councilor-At-Large

  • Montclair Board of Education – 3 seats

Residents should refer to their official sample ballot for the races and candidates appearing on their individual ballot.

Election Day Voting

On Tuesday, November 3, polls will be open from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Residents voting on Election Day must vote at their assigned polling location. Voters can confirm their registration status and find their polling location through the New Jersey Division of Elections Voter Search.
