Why Recycle?

Recycling textiles has environmental benefits and helps needy people. According to EPA’s last reported data (2018), 66% of textile waste was landfilled (using 8% of landfill space), 19% was combusted with energy recovery, and 15% was recycled.

Where to Recycle?

A “GREEN BOX” is located on the south side of the Montclair Public Library at 50 S Fullerton Avenue, Montclair, NJ 07042, easily accessed by the driveway between the library and 60 S. Fullerton Avenue.  

Accepted Items

All clean clothing, shoes, hats and accessories and textile household items such as window curtains, linens, towels, handbags and belts, in any condition.

Not Accepted Items

Rugs, textiles containing plastic or rubber, shower curtains and down pillows/comforters

What Happens to the Textiles?

The bin is owned by Green Tree Textiles who make weekly pickups.  They are a nonprofit 501 c 3 organization and tax deduction receipts for donors can be requested at www.greentreetextiles.org. Please use the evaluation guide link from that website to estimate the value of the goods donated.

Textiles are separated into 2 main categories:  

• All materials in good and wearable/usable condition are used as originally intended and distributed to for-profit/non-profit partners.
• Other materials are shredded into fibers and used as components to textile insulation.
