Prospective Candidate Notice

The Municipal Election in the Township of Montclair will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2024. montclait_logo_bw.png

There are seven elective offices in the Township of Montclair as follows:

Mayor, two (2) Councilors-at Large, First Ward Councilor; Second Ward Councilor; Third Ward Councilor, and Fourth Ward Councilor.

Montclair residents interested in running for one of the seven elective offices in the Municipal Election must be a registered voter in the Township of Montclair or Ward, as the case may be, and have been a resident of the Township or Ward, as the case may be, for at least one year as of May 14, 2024.

Nominating Petitions together with an information packet are available in the Office of the Township Clerk during normal business hours (8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.), Monday through Friday (except holidays).

Prospective candidates must first appoint a campaign treasurer and designate one campaign depository before accepting or expending any monies in connection with the forthcoming Municipal Election.

This is done by filing the name of the campaign treasurer and campaign depository with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC). For further information regarding campaign contributions and expenditures, contact ELEC at 609-292-8700 or visit https://www.elec.nj.gov/.

Election Timeline

Update(4/3/2024): The delivery of mail-in ballots for the Municipal Election will begin on April 4, 2024.

Political Signage

§ 347-109.3 Temporary signs

E. Political signs in conformity with the following regulations:

(1) Such signs shall be affixed to a principal building on the property or set back at least 10 feet from all property lines and shall not be higher than six feet from the ground at its highest point.

(2) Political signs shall not exceed four square feet in area.

(3) No political sign shall be erected or displayed on public property, including public rights-of-way and the area extending from the street line or nub to a public sidewalk.

(4) Political signs shall not be artificially illuminated.

§ 178-1 Attachment to trees or poles prohibited.

No person shall place upon or attach to any tree or telegraph, telephone, electric light, traffic or street sign pole or post upon any street within any handbill, advertisement or written or printed or partly written or printed notice of any kind, except such notices as by law are required to be posted.

§ 178-2 Fastening advertisements to sidewalks.

No person shall fasten, by pasting or otherwise, any handbills, advertisements, circulars or other written or printed matter to any sidewalk within .
