Montclair's Office of Sustainability works to make Montclair a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient community through policy development, project implementation, and public engagement. The Office leads the Township’s sustainability strategy by implementing data-driven initiatives that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, expand renewable energy use, conserve and restore natural ecosystems, and promote environmental justice and community well-being.

Its work spans both municipal operations and the broader community, with initiatives ranging from energy efficiency upgrades and food waste reduction to green infrastructure planning and climate adaptation. The Office provides guidance and resources to residents, schools, and local businesses, helping them reduce costs and adopt more sustainable practices.

Serving as a liaison to the Montclair Environmental Commission and other community partners, the Office also supports long-term planning and policy development to ensure that environmental stewardship, social equity, and economic responsibility are integrated into the Township’s operations and decision-making processes.

The mission of the Office is to:
  • Design and implement cost-effective strategies to reduce energy use and waste across municipal operations and the community;
  • Promote environmental education, community well-being, and the conservation and enhancement of natural resources among residents, schools, and businesses;
  • Serve as a bridge between the Township and the Montclair Environmental Commission to advance policies that protect Montclair’s natural environment, safeguard public health, and build resilience to future challenges.
