2026 Lead Service Line Replacement Program

Montclair Water Bureau: 2026 Lead Service Replacement Program

In July 2021, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed a package of bills aimed at protecting residents from lead poisoning. The new laws require all public community water systems in the state to inventory and replace all lead, galvanized, and brass service lines within 10 years.

While Montclair’s water mains do not contain lead, the water service line running from the water main to your home may be made of lead, especially if your building was constructed before 1940. Under the law, all lead service lines must be replaced within the 10-year period. Galvanized pipes and brass lines must also be replaced, as galvanized pipes can attract lead particles and brass pipes contain lead.

As part of this effort, the Township needs the help of residents to identify which homes may have service lines that require replacement. Resident participation is essential to ensuring all affected properties are identified and included in the program.

The replacement program is expected to be provided at no cost to eligible homeowners, but properties with unknown service line materials must first be verified in order to participate. Please follow in the instructions below:

How to find out if you have a lead or galvanized service line:

Step 1: Check Your Service Line Material
Residents should review the service line inventory to determine their eligibility:

Click here to view the inventory, which is sorted by numbered addresses.

  • Use Ctrl + F (or Command + F on Mac) to bring up a search bar, where you can enter your address.
  • Check the far-right column for your service line material:
    • L (Lead), G (Galvanized), or B (Brass)
→ You qualify for the replacement program; please see Step 2 below
    • UX (Unknown)
→ You may qualify, but verification is needed; please see Step 2 below
    • C (Copper)
→ No further action is required
Step 2: Submit Your Information (If Required)
If your property is listed as Lead, Galvanized, Brass, or Unknown, please:
  • Email a photo of your service line entering your home

  • Include your contact information

  • Send to: DoIhavelead@montclairnjusa.org (Note: To participate in the program, you must submit this email. Without it, the Water Bureau will be unable to schedule a visit to your residence.)

The Water Bureau will continue this process by conducting test holes and working directly with homeowners to update the inventory. We may schedule appointments, request that homeowners submit photos, and/or provide swab kits in the near future to verify the material used for the water service entering your home.

If you have questions, please email the Water Bureau at DoIHaveLead@montclairnjusa.org.

Please do not call - email helps us track inquiries more efficiently. When emailing, include your home address in the subject line. Due to anticipated volume, please allow a few days for a response.
