The Montclair Water Bureau will begin the first round of the Lead Service Line Replacement Program beginning this year. In July 2021, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed a package of bills aimed at protecting residents from lead poisoning. The new laws require all public community water systems in the state to inventory and replace all lead, galvanized, and brass service lines within 10 years. While Montclair’s water mains do not contain lead, the water service line running from the water main to your home may be made of lead, especially if your building was constructed before 1940. Under the law, all lead service lines must be replaced within the 10-year period. Galvanized pipes and brass lines must also be replaced, as galvanized pipes can attract lead particles and brass pipes contain lead.
