According to a recent report, Montclair was one of three New Jersey townships to be ranked on the list of "America's Top 120 Most Desired Sustainable Suburbs". The survey was conducted by Solar Insure, a solar energy company based in California, which asked over 3,000 participants on the "greenest" towns they would most like to move to for an eco-friendly and sustainable lifestyle. According to the survey, the communities that earned a spot on the list offer the "charm and amenities of suburban living and prioritize green initiatives, energy efficiency, and a commitment to reducing their environmental footprint".
Montclair ranked no. 36 on the list, appearing alongside two other New Jersey towns, Princeton and Maplewood. Several factors and initiatives contributed to Montclair's high ranking on the list, including:

Montclair is also currently working with the NJ Department of Environmental Protection through the Resilient NJ: Municipal Assistance Program, which aims to help local governments in preparing for the effects of climate change and adverse weather. As part of the program, the township is seeking input from residents, students, and business owners across Montclair to share their experiences with natural hazards and climate issues.
