"Commingled" recycling refers to mixed containers—plastics, metals, and glass—that are collected together. All items must be empty and thoroughly rinsed of food and contents.
Accepted Commingled Items
Exclude all: Black plastic containers, any item where all sides are less than 3 inches long. These items are not visible to automated sorting machines.
Unacceptable Commingled Items
Items not listed above contaminate the recycling stream. When in doubt, throw it out as Refuse.
Non-Recyclable Plastics: Plastic bags, film, wrap, Styrofoam, microwave trays, nursery/flower pots, clam shells/food/party trays (even if marked #1, #2, #5), and toys.
Non-Container Metal/Glass: Mirrors, window glass, auto glass, light bulbs, ceramics, pots, pans, hangers, and small appliances. Some of these may qualify as Scrap Metal, Plate Glass, or Appliance recycling.
Contaminated Items: Pizza boxes, soiled paper, and containers for hazardous materials (pesticides, chemicals, antifreeze, or oil).
Household Items: Needles, syringes, rubber/pool/vacuum hoses, shower curtains, PVC pipe, bowling balls, pesticide, motor oil, or antifreeze containers.
Preparation Instructions
Items must be placed in a covered rigid plastic or metal container with handles (maximum capacity 35 gallons) and must not exceed 50 pounds when full. Do not place in bags or cardboard boxes, since these will not be collected.
Empty & Rinse: All containers must be completely free of food and contents.
Remove Accessories: Discard all metal, cork, plastic bottle tops, lids, straws, pumps, or sprayers with regular trash.
Do Not Crush: Do not break or crush glass into small pieces.
