Township Manager statement on upcoming Montclair Special Election

Statement from Montclair Township Manager Stephen Marks on the Township's role in the Upcoming Special Election of December 9th
The Montclair Board of Education has voted to hold a special election on December 9, 2025, asking voters to consider two ballot questions that would provide funding to stabilize the district’s finances. While the Board of Education is responsible for the referendum and the County Board of Taxation certifies the tax rate, the Township's role is to issue tax bills and collect school taxes.
This is an extraordinary set of circumstances with no clear precedent, which is why the Township’s Finance Department and Tax Collector are in active communication with the Essex County Board of Taxation and the New Jersey Division of Taxation to determine the exact timing and process for tax billing and collection, should the referendum pass.
Although these discussions are ongoing, we want to assure the community that the Township will share confirmed details with residents as soon as they become available. We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as this process unfolds.
While the potential tax implications are still being discussed, residents are encouraged to review the Montclair Board of Education’s explainer for full information about the referendum - including how, where, and when to vote: Board of Education Referendum Information
