More than 2,000 responses inform next steps for potential Montclair shuttle service
To gauge interest in relaunching a local shuttle bus service, Montclair Township surveyed local residents this summer.
A strong majority of respondents expressed interest in a future shuttle bus service and indicated they would be willing to pay a $1 or $2 fare to ride.
The survey was published on SurveyMonkey and distributed through Township communication channels, with flyers at community hubs throughout town and an accompanying press release. Paper copies were also made available at the Clerk’s Office.
More than 2,000 responses were received; 93% of completed surveys were from Montclair residents, in all 4 wards.
Survey responses identified several gaps in local public transportation and showed interest in a shuttle serving a range of travel needs, including train commuting, grocery shopping, dining and entertainment, school transportation, and medical appointments.
“Montclair’s former commuter train shuttle service ended several years ago after declining ridership,” said Deputy Mayor Susan Shin Andersen. “We are reimagining a shuttle service that will be cost-effective while creating a stronger foundation and broader use for residents and local businesses.”
The Local Shuttle Transportation committee of Montclair’s Public Transportation Working Group is dedicated to evaluating the needs of the community and exploring the feasibility of a shuttle service. The committee acknowledges the difficulties many residents face due to limited access to bus services, and aims to identify the most effective solutions to tackle these challenges.
In the coming months, the committee will analyze options and costs for shuttle service, identify potential funding sources and partnership opportunities, and propose next steps for discussion by Township and Council.
The committee welcomes input from all residents and encourages the community to continue to share their thoughts via info@montclairnjusa.org.
